One of the things I have a depth of experience in is investigations. Having done them in a number of organisations and sectors.
This could be complex grievances that may come about because of an employee being performance managed, or a breakdown in the working relationship; a whistleblowing claim etc. They can of course be tricky and often highly sensitive, and dealt with at all levels up to senior management level.
My top tips are:
Don't jump to conclusions: take each section of the investigation at a time and keep an open mind throughout
Prepare thoroughly for each person you are interviewing
Gather all relevant facts/data points for example it might be reviewing CCTV or work records
Ensure clear notes are taken so there is an accurate record. Whilst AI can be great, care needs to be taken on accuracy
Listen actively and remain composed throughout. Probe carefully on language and spell out exactly what was said, don't mask over swear words - spell it out exactly
Maintain strict confidentiality throughout
Be prepared to take action, for example if somebody needs suspending imminently
Gather up an investigation summary report. I've seen many managers try and avoid this step due to lack of time, but this is particularly valid when there are several witnesses involved to make clear what was said, or lots of evidence to reflect back on. Keep to the facts here
Remember that this stage can go on to onward steps such as Hearing/s so ensure this stage is done professionally and thoroughly
You might be in a company where no HR team exists, or perhaps you need an unbiased, senior HR professional because too many people have been involved. Having spent over 20 years working in HR roles within engineering, manufacturing, automotive, telecoms, retail, NHS and charity; in both unionised and non-unionised environments, I have a wealth of experience and can take the load off you. Do get in touch for a confidential, no obligation chat, if I can be of help.
On a side note, the picture below is from Bletchley Park, which is a fascinating place to visit if you're interested in how they did codebreaking in the war.
